The Georgian Country House, Petworth

The Brief

To create a kitchen to sit within the architecture of this stunning Georgian Country House to be enjoyed by a keen cook and their extended family. The kitchen would be in constant use so considered details for every element of storage and the chef’s requirements are at the heart of our design.

Elements

We worked in collaboration with our interior designer client to create cabinetry with a furniture-based approach crafted to be sympathetic to this beautiful Georgian property. The kitchen sits within quite a tricky space in this historic home. With access to the garden, cellar and dining areas all flowing off the kitchen it was vital a bespoke, considered approach was taken.

The traditional bakers table with dresser front and turned legs in indicative of this period and sits within the fabric of the home. The soft blue hue chosen by the our client further grounds this piece within its surrounding. The natural Oak detailing of shelf beings a gentle, authentic feel to the piece. With integrated sink and pair of dishwashers its indeed a hardworking piece.

The gentle Carrara Marble countertops give ample space to prep and present meals within easy reach of the dining table. The generous double bowled sink with enviable views across the garden is engaged in the space and surroundings and directly opposite the Aga for ease.

The cooker elevation was designed with a delicate curve to allow flow around to the formal dining room, larder and cellar. With the centerpiece Aga this elevation has purpose in the graduated drawers creating a home for all the chefs equipment. Leading round to the full height larders which maximize the space in this area. These bespoke larders were made to a slim depth to allow for flow to the other areas and with bifolding doors so that the walkway was not interrupted.

The Fridge freezer offers a generous storage capacity for this busy kitchen discretely integrated into the tall elevation.

Contemporary additions within the space such as the Carrara Marble shelf above the cooker and the lighting are choices curated by our interior designer client and give the kitchen a considered, timeless appeal.
